Is Hungary really at the forefront of worldwide vaccination?
The Hungarian government has long referred to itself as the flagship of the coronavirus vaccination, highlighting what a good decision it was to supplement Western vaccines with Eastern ones. But what does it mean to be at the forefront of vaccinations in the world?
According to the latest data from ourworldindata.org, by the beginning of May, Hungary was in the top five in terms of overall vaccinations, and – excluding microstates – it ranks second in administered doses per 100 people. Unfortunately, our mortality statistics are similarly at the forefront – highlights Index.
In terms of the number of coronavirus vaccines administered/100 people, Hungary has been among the top countries since 1 May. In the last six days, only Mongolia and San Marino came before Hungary in terms of daily doses – in a seven-day moving average: 2.85 out of 100 people in Mongolia were vaccinated, with San Marino at 1.35 /100 while Hungary is up 1.22 /100.
Similarly to mortality data, it is worth excluding microstates. In that sense, Hungary is second behind Mongolia with a population of 3.3 million.
In addition to the EU countries, Index placed the non-EU members of the world’s 10 largest economies, on the graph.
The graph highlights that we left the United States on April 25, which was also preceded by the United Kingdom. One day later, Germany was in second place, and since May 3, Europe has dominated the top-5 (Hungary, Germany, Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom). Interestingly, according to the latest data, Lithuanians administered the 4th most vaccines per 100 people.
Looking at the share of people who received at least one dose, Israel (62.5%) has been the world leader (among countries with a population of at least one million) since December 26.
The world average is 7.9%, compared to 25.8% in the EU.
In Hungary, Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Janssen vaccines are currently available through the EU, while Hungary imports Chinese (Sinopharm) and Russian Sputnik V vaccines on its own account.
- Shady business around the Sinopharm vaccines in Hungary?
- Can’t wait? Go and get a vaccine in Russia or in the USA!
In addition to the excellent Hungarian vaccination campaign, let us not forget that, calculated on the basis of a seven-day moving average per 1 million people, Hungary is still the world leader in Covid mortality.
